Round and Round and Round We Go On Immigration

New York Mayor Bloomberg warns about the demise of New York City if immigrants are deported. After walking around Central Park for an afternoon, I cringe to think about the number of New York families who'll no longer have immigrant nannies to raise their children. Indeed, Bloomberg understands that the U.S. has always relied on immigrants, illegal or otherwise, to perform the heavy lifting for pennies on the dollar. After all, he's a businessman.

Corporations everywhere are squirming over the thought of higher wages and a reduced, non-union immigrant labor pool. We'll continue to hear Beltway rhetoric telling us about how immigrants are bankrupting the states, and how, you, the hardworking taxpayer are footing the bill. Quite frankly, the whole deal seems like one huge corporate welfare scam because it's the corporations who benefit from the immigrant labor pool. This is the same game that's been played since this country was under British control.

Nonetheless, billions of dollars will be extracted from our pockets to build a fence. The fence won't help anyone except one or two corporations who'll get a no bid contract to build the stupid thing. Immigrants will continue to arrive; they'll find a different route of entry.
