July 1911--Over the past few months, CTCN has documented the rise of the automobile within Coshocton. With the rise in auto use, came many complaints ranging from speeding to driving without headlamps. Numerous residents were up in arms and howling for police intervention. At this point, I'm relatively certain the police didn't yet own a vehicle (one would be approved soon-ed).
Which leads us to the 7th street bottle smasher; a woman vigilante who apparently didn't appreciate the finer points of motoring through the community. According to the Daily Age, an unnamed motorist came upon several broken beer bottles strewn across 7th street. Not wanting to have his tires flattened, he picked up every piece of glass and placed it on the curbing.
While toiling beneath the July sun, he noticed a group of boys watching. He asked the boys who put the glass into the street. They wouldn't say. He offered a $5 bribe. Once again, he was rebuffed.
The man climbed into his car and as he drove away he saw a woman come to the curb. She kicked the glass back into the street. Immediately, he wheeled his car around and confronted the woman. He told her, in no uncertain terms, that he would have her arrested if the incident happened again. The 7th street bottle smasher was never heard from again
