Area Man Killed In Steam Road Roller Accident

October 1911--Gilbert Rutledge suffered one of Coshocton's most horrible accidents when he was caught in the drive shaft of a steam road roller. He was ground and burned to death.

According to the Coshocton Daily Age, Rutledge had a "presentiment of approaching danger" and told a friend he did not want to go to work that fateful Saturday morning.

Eyewitness John Norris said Rutledge's shirt sleeve became entangled in a projecting bolt and his body was drawn against the fire box. His arm and neck were wrapped entirely around the drive shaft.

A number of curious onlookers visited Rutledge's body at Wolfe's morgue and were horrified by the sight of the victim's burned and badly mangled body.

Dead Man's Hole Survivor Dies Three Days Later

July 1908--Five days ago, CTCN posted a story about John James, a young Coshocton man, who survived underwater for four minutes and nearly drowned.

Three days after James' near fatal accident, he died due to the paralysis, in conjuntion with a pneumonia. The paralysis which mysteriously caused his near drowning was not attributed to any specific cause. According to the Coshocton Age, doctors surmised a blow to the head while diving may have created the paralysis although there were no visible marks on James. Another theory was that a twisting motion may have damaged James' spinal cord causing the paralysis.

No one will ever know how John James became paralyzed after jumping into Dead Man's Hole.
