Claim Filed: Liberty Bond Signs Defaced

October 1917
--L.B. Williams, manager of the central liberty loan committee, fourth federal reserve district, filed a complaint with the Columbus district attorney, that pro-German interests in Coshocton county were tearing down liberty bond road signs. The signs read"German Slavery or Liberty Bonds". The complaint stated the signs were defaced to read "German Liberty or Slavery Bonds".

Once a local investigation was completed, it was determined that signs were removed by the agricultural society. The signs had been posted on fairground property without permission. Also, it was determined the signs had not been defaced.

Once permission was granted by the fair board, liberty bond signs were tacked up on fairground buildings.
