July 1911--She made a promise to her husband on his death bed. She promised to never marry a man her husband bitterly hated. Just one month after Simon Fisher's death, his wife married Walter Carnes.
In a front page story reported by the Coshocton Daily Age, Simon Fisher's ghost returned for retribution and began haunting the little house on North Sixth Street.
The Carnes lived happy for one month and the noises began. The first encounter with Simon Fisher's ghost happened late one night while Mrs. Carnes first son slept on a couch. He was awakened by a touch to his shoulder. He awoke and was startled to Simon Fisher standing next to the couch.
Sounds of a man walking through the home startled the younger children. Dresser drawers rattled. Doors opened and closed. Mrs. Carnes claimed the ghost followed her around the home for hours. She heard footsteps behind her, but couldn't see her deceased husband.
Mrs. Carnes began losing weight and rapidly graying due to the ghost's presence. People claimed she looked as though she had aged 10 years in a couple of months.
Mr. and Mrs. Carnes left their home to spend the summer away from the ghost.
