1906--Mrs. Hugh Gamble, proprietor of the Mecca Hotel, fell victim to a scamming guest.
Mrs. Gamble had been directed to contact the Eldridge-Higgins Company to collect for the guest's week long stay. As he left, with luggage in tow, he provided Mrs. Gamble a a phone number and stated he had been authorized by the company to stay at the hotel.
After a call to the company, Mrs. Gamble found out the man, who was blind, had hustled her for the week long stay.
