Who Needs Xanax When There's Sarsparilla?

March 2, 1912--One of the things I've noticed while perusing the papers: health was a major obsession. The big difference between now and then was the health care industrial complex. In 1912, there were no major drug producing companies, no HMO's, and like today, very little truth about effects of various remedies.

In a quarter page ad, Hood's sarsparilla claims, "Leads all medicines in the area of all spring ailments, humors, loss of appetite, that tired feeling, paleness and nervousness. Take it."

There it is, sports fans. Next time you're feeling a little shagged and need to bring color to your skin, drop that Xanax and crack a sarsparilla.
